New Canadian Virtual Health Library Goes Live

leave a comment »

The Canadian Virtual Health Library (CVHL) is pleased to announce the launch of its new website.

The new website features information about the CVHL (e.g. Board of Directors, staff, FAQs ) and most importantly contains a “Virtual Library”. The Library will soon contain licensed resources, but for now provides indexed links to freely available health information, in both English and French.  These links provide health librarians and health practitioners with easy access to high quality health information.  Each has been selected by an expert panel of health librarians with the goal of providing high quality, evidence-informed, health information resources.  This continuously updated free content will serve as a complement to the licensed resources that will be licensed by CVHL.

The official launch of the website will occur at the annual CHLA Conference in Calgary from May 27-30. The CVHL will host a presentation on Sunday May 29 to introduce the website, as well as to discuss the successes and challenges faced over the past year.   There will also be a booth (Saturday & Sunday), with a live connection to the website for those wishing to have a demonstration or who are just curious and would like to ask questions!

For those of you that can’t wait until the CHLA Conference, browse the new site at www.cvhl-bvcs.ca  Remember to register so that you can post comments, participate in community forums, and suggest new content.  Please consider checking the box that allows us to contact you and conduct short surveys via email; this will assist us in determining your satisfaction. The CVHL wants to hear from you and we are seeking your input!

We’d like to thank the many provincial library consortia that have agreed to join us as “Network Subscribers”. We have also been supported by and spoken to every CHLA Chapter about the CVHL and the important work we are trying to achieve. And of course we must thank those who have helped fund us, the Canadian Health Libraries Association and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

Calling all Canadian Health Librarians and Information Specialists!

leave a comment »

Below is a link to a two-part survey. We hope that all Canadian health librarians and information specialists will take 10 minutes (or less) to fill out Part I, which is a short demographic survey that will provide context for a more specific project on embedded librarianship.

Part II is intended only for those health librarians or information specialists whose jobs are focused on working with health research teams. If this describes you, we hope you will take an additional 5-10 minutes to complete Part II. Our research project team is attempting to describe the Canadian landscape for Research-Embedded Health Librarians (REHLs). This seems to be a growing area of employment but is not well documented in the literature. We intend to disseminate the results of this project via conferences and peer-reviewed journal articles.

It is your choice whether or not you wish to participate in this survey. Any question you prefer not to answer can be skipped and you can terminate the survey at any time by closing your browser. Responses are anonymous; therefore, after clicking the ‘Submit’ button at the end of the survey your answers will be entered into the pool, at which point they cannot be withdrawn.

The online survey will be open from Wednesday March 9 through Friday March 25. If you have colleagues you think would be interested in completing this survey, please forward this invitation to them.

CHLA Mentorship Interest Group

leave a comment »

The Mentorship Interest Group is always looking for librarians at all stages of their career to participate in the CHLA mentorship program.

Are you a new health librarian, early in your career, looking for advice and support from a more experienced professional?  Or are you further along in your career and feel that you have some advice or support to give to a newer member of the workforce?

Those who apply will be matched as quickly as possible with a mentor or mentee with similar interests.  Matches are sent monthly emails with an inspirational quote and a check-in activity or conversation topic to help develop their mentoring relationship.

To benefit from the mentoring program, fill out and return the attached application form.  Be sure to select the form that reflects what you’d like to get out of the program (i.e. being a mentor vs. being a mentee).

For more information about the CHLA Mentorship Program see the CHLA Mentorship Guidelines posted on the Mentorship Interest Group forum section of the CHLA website, or contact the group convener, Brooke Ballantyne Scott (brooke.scott@fraserhealth.ca 604-520-4755).

The Mentorship Interest Group is also looking for a new convener!  If you’re already a member of the Mentorship Interest Group, you can apply for the role of convener (a two year commitment) right away by contacting Brooke.  If you’re not already a member, fill out the application form, and let Brooke know when you apply that you’re also interested in being the next convener.

Canadian Virtual Health Library Web Content Strategy Expert Panel

leave a comment »

The Canadian Virtual Health Library / Bibliothèque virtuelle canadienne de la santé (CVHL / BVCS) is pleased to announce the formation of a Web Content Strategy Expert Panel to assist in the development of links to free web content for health librarians and health professionals.  The panel is comprised of the following members:
  •       Natalie Clairoux M.Sc., M.S.I. (Bibliothèque de la santé, Université de Montréal)
  •       Tom Flemming MA, MLS, AHIP (retired)
  •       Dean Giustini MLS, MEd (UBC Biomedical Branch Library)

The Web Content Strategy Expert Panel will provide their advice in identifying, evaluating, selecting and organizing non-licensed “free” content for the launch of the CVHL / BVCS website.  This free content will serve as a complement to the resources that will eventually be licensed by CVHL / BVCS.  Once a permanent structure is in place, an Advisory Committee will be established by CVHL / BVCS, which will provide on-going support for the selection, provision and development of content for the project.

The overall goal of the CVHL / BVCS Content Strategy is to help lead Canadian health professionals towards information that is:

  •       Relevant to practice in Canadian health settings
  •       Evidence-based or evidence-informed where required or necessary
  •       Applicable at the point of care and,
  •       Of the highest quality available
